Booth: Haye not running away

Monday, February 20, 2012

Adam Booth says David Haye has nothing to run away from following Saturday night's post-fight brawl in Munich and would return to Germany to face police questioning.

Haye and fellow Brit Dereck Chisora locked horns at the post-fight press conference following the latter's points defeat by WBC champion Vitali Klitschko.

Chisora arrived back in England on Sunday night after being freed without charge following questioning. Police in Munich remain keen to interview Haye about the violent scenes.

Booth, Haye's trainer, said the former WBA heavyweight champion checked out of his Munich hotel - where Chisora was also staying - shortly after the press conference before flying home.

He told The Daily Telegraph: "We have not been contacted or called by the German police. Of course we would answer any questions, and would go to Germany to be interviewed. We have nothing to run away from.

"We left the press conference, and it would have been stupid to go back to the same hotel as Chisora and his mob.

"He had said he was going to assault David, and then screamed he was going to shoot him and burn him. We decided to go to the airport and get an early flight home.

Defensive reflex

"What David did was a defensive reflex. The man said he was going to slap him, walked 20 yards towards him, took his jacket off, went straight into a headbutt and shoved his fist into David's chin. Everything was a defensive reflex from David."

Meanwhile Munich police spokesman Gottfried Schlicht had told Sky Sports News on Sunday: "David Haye is not in his hotel, he is not at the airport. We don't know where he is.

"We also want to speak to him about what happened last night. We have to hear both sides of the story.

"It's not a charge against David Haye. We have to report everything that happened last night between (Chisora and Haye).

"Maybe he (Haye) has gone home, yes. Then maybe we would talk to our colleagues in Great Britain."

Chisora's promoter Frank Warren was unhappy that the incident took place and, while clearly critical of Chisora's conduct, pointed the finger at Haye, who had been commentating on the bout.

"It was an embarrassment for British boxing," Warren said. "I would say they were total idiots.

"(But Chisora) didn't throw the first punch, it's as simple as that. He got hit in the lip with a glass or a bottle, he said.

"I'm sure the police will get to the bottom of it in Germany."
