Battling Murray into last four

Wednesday, March 28, 2012

Andy Murray battled back from a set down to beat Janko Tipsarevic 4-6 6-3 6-4 in the quarter-finals of the Miami Masters.

In a match that saw Murray's fortunes ebb and flow throughout, the world number four eventually found a way past the troublesome Serb in two hours and 38 minutes.

A set and a break down early in the second after calling for the trainer, Murray embarked on a run of five games to level the match and move up a break in the decider.

There was a time when Tipsarevic could do no wrong but the Briton hung in as his opponent started to wilt in the heat, and with his hit-and-miss serve firing again finally booked his place in the last four on his first match point.

Trainer

Murray was broken in the opening game but Tipsarevic was the first to call for the trainer after he was broken back, and another break for a 4-2 lead saw Murray in control of proceedings.

However, the ninth seed immediately broke back and held serve to square things up at 4-4, before breaking the Scot again in the ninth game.

An ace gave the ninth seed two set points and he repeated the feat with the next point to land the set in 53 minutes.

Things failed to improve as the world number four was broken in the first game of the second set, prompting Murray to seek medical advice for what appeared to be a stomach complaint.

Tipsarevic held serve to win a sixth successive game but Murray finally stopped the rot by holding serve and then broke to level, but the topsy-turvy nature of the contest continued when Tipsarevic took the second of two break points to go 3-2 ahead.

Distance

Murray broke back immediately to love to take his run of points on Tipsarevic's serve to seven in a row, then held serve and broke again.

He took the first of two set points to win the set in 51 minutes and make sure the match went the distance and with his opponent tiring Murray started to look more like his old self the longer the match progressed.

He broke decisively to lead 2-1 and although Murray had to save break points in the eighth game he came through another mini-crisis to serve out for the match.

Murray will take on the winner of the night match between Rafael Nadal and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the semi-finals.
