Demolished! Wenger tears into team and concedes Arsenal are out after Milan mauling

Wednesday, February 15, 2012

Arsene Wenger slammed his players as Arsenal's Champions League dreams were torn to shreds in the San Siro.

AC Milan thrashed the Gunners 4-0, thanks to Robinho's double, Kevin-Prince Boateng's strike and Zlatan Ibrahimovic's penalty.

Wenger said: 'It was a shocking result and a shocking performance. It's a night never to forget. It was our worst night in Europe. We made mistake after mistake and were punished, and deservedly so.

'We were never in the game. We were very poor offensively and defensively. It was shocking to see. Not one moment in the 90 minutes were we really in the game.

'We had to chase the game and open our game up and we were caught by balls over the top. It's difficult to analyse. It's better not to talk too much, to analyse with a cooler head and regroup.'

The Frenchman tried to look ahead to the rest of the season but will be without the departing Thierry Henry.

The loss was Arsenal's first by a four-goal margin in 222 European ties and Wenger added: 'It's a disaster, but the season is not finished.

'The players are very ambitious in the Champions League and will be very sad. We felt powerless today to get into the game.'

When asked if his side could still progress to the quarter-finals, Wenger said: 'Let's be realistic. We don't play in a dream world. There may be two per cent or five per cent chance statistically, but realistically we're out.'

For AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri, it was the 'perfect performance'.

The Serie A leaders had not won any of their last seven matches against English clubs, and were knocked out of the Champions League at this stage by Tottenham last season, losing 1-0 at home.

However, the Rossoneri never looked in danger of a repeat.

Allegri had his side well organised from kick-off as Arsenal struggled to get any sort of foothold, regardless of the poor San Siro pitch, the turf recently relaid down the flanks.

The AC Milan manager said: 'We played very well as a team and gave them no goalscoring opportunities. We were especially good when Arsenal had ball possession.

'We could have scored more, however we have a good lead and it will be necessary to play as well again when we get to London.'
